Barton shows his true colours..again

Just as we all thought that Joey Barton was maturing we see another occasion where his lack of discipline will cost him once again.

His punch on Morten Gamst Pedersen in the match against Blackburn will back up those who believe that a leopard can’t change his spots. His actions were not even in the ‘heat of the moment’ so he has no excuse on that front. This was semi-calculated. Barton saw that the referee was pre-occupied with an injury that he thought that he could get away with it. He must have forgotten that each Premier League match has enough cameras to not miss anything. He must also have forgotten that he is somebody who will have special attention from the broadcasters just in case this exact type of situation arises. I actually think that he realised that it may have been captured and tried to pretend that he had merely pushed Pederson instead of the punch which was thrown. I admire the public reaction from Pederson. He knows what happened and that we can all see for ourselves. Let the FA decide.

Over the past few years we have heard apology after apology from Barton who has been on his last chance numerous times. He has been backed publicly to a degree by each manager he has played for. I don’t blame managers for publicly backing him. This is all part of the job. They need to keep their players on side. To say that ‘I haven’t seen it’ though is not any kind of excuse. Managers get the opportunity to view any controversial decisions before being interviewed.

So what will happen now? Given his past record he should be severely punished. This is the type of behaviour that has no place in our game. For me, he should be given a 5 or 6 match ban. If the referee had seen it he would have been given at least 3 games but surely his record should promote a sterner sentence.   He will come out and say that he made a mistake. He will apologise to his team mates, manager and family and say that it won’t happen again.

But we all know that it is only a matter of time until it does.
