Kevin Davies…our next hero ?

Looking through all of the commentsregarding the inclusion of Kevin Davies in to the latest England squad leaves me wondering how he will be used if he plays any part.

He has made his name as a good old fashioned English centre forward. You must class him in the same mould as Emile Heskey.

But will he bring an added dimension to the England team ? If you were to ask all Premier League defenders who they like to play against least I would bet that he is pretty high up on most lists.

To me, he typifies the English way. His technical ability is almost certainly not up to that of the most astute of England internationals. But you have to argue that he is effective. He does make defences work and doesnt give a minutes peace to anybody around him.

So after a World Cup where our stars were accused of showing any ‘passion’ ( a word grossly over used but I get the point), is it not a good idea to draft in a player of this type to instill some ‘passion’ in to a passionless squad ? Maybe Fabio Capello is hoping that this ‘passion’ will rub off on some of the squad as well as fans.

What we must do though is play to his strengths. There is no value in trying to play through defenses with intricate passing. We need to get the ball forward to him early and maimise our crosses in to the box.

So would this mean us going backto the days of long ball football ?

Would supporters accept this if  it produced a winning England side?

Or is it a sign of the times that we are bringing a 30+ battering ram into the new age of our football development ?

Yes, yes and yes.

I would prefer to hear about a call up for Jamie Forrester than Davies!

I like him as a player – not sure he is international class (but if heskey can….) and a much better choice than Andy Carole who has potential but shouldn’t be anywhere near the England team at this stage
